General advice on posting to the list:
Please engage brain first and ask yourself whether the vast majority of the list would gain from what you are about to write!

Please make sure that all postings to the list are in plain text only - turn off your HTML option! Instructions for setting most email programs (including Hotmail) to send plain text can be found at http://www.expita.com/nomime.html.

For Outlook Express users:

Run Outlook Express
Go to the 'Tools' menu, select 'Options'
In the window that appears, select the 'Send' tab (2nd from left)
In the 'Mail sending format' section choose 'Plain Text'
Then click 'Apply' and then 'OK'

You can do the same thing for News, but News is configured as Plain Text
by default, whereas Mail isn't.'

To find out more about this whole subject the following site is a goldmine, and not just for Outlook Express users, but all mail readers, including AOL 6.0: http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/1236/nomime.html

I understand this is the way to post in plain text via AOL 9.0....
AOL 9.0 for Windows

Compose and address the email as desired.
With the mouse arrow somewhere in the body of the message, click the Right mouse button,
revealing a contextual menu (AKA Right-Click).
Choose Compose As Plain Text.

Note that changing the text to normal will eliminate the "blue bar" quoted text indicator and collapse paragraphs therein."

FAQs

"Can I send binaries to the list?"

Try not to attach binary files to postings to the Fairport List. Not everyone, particularly subscribers to the digest version of the list, necessarily wants these and by the time the digest is built the attachments can no longer be easily extracted from the rest of the message and readers are left with a long and meaningless stream of characters to scroll through.

If you have an interesting binary file then, by all means, let the rest of the list know about it and then, if they are interested send it by private, off-list email or, perhaps, make the file available on a web server somewhere.

"How can I get hold of a copy of 'Fairport Songbook 1'?"

This is now availiable from www.fairportconvention.com

"What are FC's recent set lists?"

Download them in Adobe Acrobat format.

"I've recently joined the list / have been away on holiday and have missed some messages / I've deleted an important message by mistake/... How can I get copies of old messages?"

A WWW interface to the list archive (since the server crash early in 2007) is now available at http://www.mcvax.org/mailman/private/fairport-list/. This is for list members only.

"What size shirt does the average fairport-list member wear?"

1% small  10% medium  26% large   42% x-large  21% xx-large.

For full info about listmembers' T-shirts and sweat shirts, contact Widds.
View proposed new T-shirt designs here.

"What do we look like?"

Go to Widds's List Photo Gallery to find out, or Carol's.

"What is a 'Pegg Number'?"

This is a measure of the degree of separation from DP to any other person (alive or dead) The smaller the number, the closer the link. Click on the link!

"What is Fairport's taping policy??"

No problem - as long as it's for your use *only*. Don't forget that irrespective of what Fairport allow the venue may have a taping policy and indeed also a photo policy.
