HAND OF KINDNESS by Richard Thompson
(Songs of PolyGram International, Inc., BMI)Arranged for solo guitar
I have tried to keep the rhythm consistent:
one beat in a 4/4 measure takes up 8 characters in the tab.
In other words, a single character width represents a thirty-second note.
The words under the tab are kind of mushed together to attempt to show the timing of the lyrics.
On the record, Thompson plays an extended solo between the second chorus and verse 3.
He ends the song by repeating the chorus on verse 3,
and soloing over the groove while the song fades out.
When I play, I don't play a solo -- I go straight from verse 2 to verse 3 --
and I end the song by going back to the groove after the second verse 3 chorus,
and closing on the arpeggiated D7sus2 chord.

Verses:
1. Well, I wove the rope
And I picked the spot
Well, I stuck out my neck
And I tightened the knot
Oh, stranger, stranger
How near our time
(*in the liner notes it is "It don't do to waste time")
You stretch out your hand
I stretch out mine
Chorus:
Maybe just the hand of kindness
Maybe just the hand of kindness
Maybe just a hand
Stranger will you reach me in time
In time
2. Well I scuppered the ship
And I bent the rail
And I cut the brake
And I ripped the sail
And they called me a Jonah
It's a sin I survived
You stretch out your hand
I stretch out mine
3. Shoot that old horse
Break in the new
The hung are many
The living are few
I see your intention
Here's my neck on the line
You stretch out your hand
I stretch out mine
HOW WILL I EVER BE SIMPLE AGAIN? by Richard Thompson.
from Daring Adventures
Capo 1st fret
A D A
Oh, She danced in the street with the guns all around her,
A E
All torn like a rag doll, barefoot in the rain
A D A
And she sang like a child too-ra day too-ra da dee
A E A
Oh, how will I ever be simple again?
She sat by the banks of the dirty grey river
And tried for a fish with a worm on a pin.
There was nothing but fever and ghosts in the water
Oh, how will I ever be simple again?
Bridge 1
D A
War was my love and my friend and companion
D A E
And what did I care for the pretty and plain?
A D A
But her smile was so clear and my heart was so troubled
A E A
Oh, how will I ever be simple again?
Solo (tab below)
In her poor burned-out house I sat at her table
The smell of her hair was like cornfields in May
And I wanted to weep and my eyes ached from trying
Oh, how will I ever be simple again?
Bridge 2
So graceful she moved through the dust and the ruin
And happy she was in her dances and games.
Oh teach me to see with your innocent eyes, love.
Oh, how will I ever be simple again?

And now you look at me
With that same old used-to-be

Like the dust, I'm blown out on the street again
Restless highway
I need to leave this town behind
Restless highway
Come see the country of my mind
You hear my footsteps wherever this rocky road will wind
This empty restless highway is my heart
Restless highway
I need to leave this town behind
Restless highway
Come see the country of my mind
You hear my footsteps wherever this rocky road will wind
This empty restless highway is my heart
This empty restless highway is my heart
